PhyCS 2017 Conference, Madrid - Spain
PhyCS is the annual meeting (28-29 July, 2017) of the physiological interaction and computing community, and serves as the main international forum for engineers, computer scientists and health professionals, interested in outstanding research and development that bridges the gap between physiological data handling and human-computer interaction.
Researchers attending PhyCS seek to extend the state-of-the-art, design of new wearable devices that make physiological data acquisition more pervasive, design of user interfaces capable of recognizing and adapting to changes in the physiological state of the user, and / or the creation of algorithms to enable robust and seamless control of computational resources.

NeuroAdaptive Technology Conference
The conference is based around the theme of Neuroadaptive Technology where measures of the brain and CNS are used for closed-loop control. The aim is to bring together researchers from applied neurosciences, engineering and computer science to explore the emergence of this nascent technology. The range of relevant topics includes: passive BCI, physiological computing, affective computing, robotics, neurofeedback, autonomous technology, gaming, wearable sensors, HCI evaluation and neuroethics.

Cybathlon 2016 Powered Exoskeleton Finals
Cybathlon 2016 provides a platform for the development of novel assistive technologies that are useful for daily life. Through the organisation of the Cybathlon we want to remove barriers between people with disabilities, the public and technology developers.
Individuals with physical disabilities competed side by side in six demanding disciplines, using the latest assistive technologies.
Watch the athletes as they tackled flights of stairs in the new wheel chairs and proved their speed and skill using the most up-to-date modern prostheses. The various races tested how the competitors cope with specific challenges and activities from everyday life.

New EEG device from OpenBCI - Do it yourself!
OpenBCI has a new concept of EEG devices where you can create yourself with a desktop 3D-printer. You can also buy the product fully-assembled.
The Ultracortex is an open-source, 3D-printable headset intended to work with any OpenBCI Board. It is capable of recording research-grade brain activity (EEG), muscle activity (EMG), and heart activity (ECG). The Ultracortex Mark IV is capable of sampling up to 16 channels of EEG from up to 35 different 10-20 locations.
The Ultracortex Mark IV is the latest edition of the Ultracortex—a comfortable, adjustable, and 3D-printable EEG headset, compatible with all of the OpenBCI boards.

3D Hologram to Walk through the Brain
Taking a walk inside your brain sounds like science fiction, but this hologram takes us a step closer, according to the researchers who created it. The team at 3D developers Holoxica in Scotland claim this is the first ever 3D digital hologram of the human brain fibre connections.
Developers say a hologram of a healthy brain was made via a technique called “Fibre Tractography”. The technique tracks nerve fibre pathways inside the brain by measuring the movement of water molecules in the brain’s white matter.

We seek candidates with excellent communication skills: fluent written and spoken scientific English (proficiency in other languages will be seen as a plus, but is not a requirement). An academic degree (PhD is preferred, but we will also consider an Academic Diploma and Masters) in neuroscience, psychology, psychophysiology, or a related field is required.
The candidates should have expertise in conducting, analyzing, and publishing EEG experiments or similar complex neurophysiological analyses (the ideal candidate is a current user of our hardware and software solutions). Experience in writing and managing grants is also a plus.

BCI with fully Implantable Devices - DARPA
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program aims to develop an implantable neural interface able to provide unprecedented signal resolution and data-transfer bandwidth between the human brain and the digital world. The interface would serve as a translator, converting between the electrochemical language used by neurons in the brain and the ones and zeros that constitute the language of information technology.
The goal is to achieve this communications link in a biocompatible device no larger than one cubic centimeter in size, roughly the volume of two nickels stacked back to back.

Abstract: The research field of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) emerged in an attempt to enable communication between paralyzed patients and technology. Identifying an individual’s mental state, through his brain’s electric activity, a typical BCI system assigns to it a particular action in the computer. It is known that when the visual cortex is stimulated with a certain frequency, it shows activity with the same frequency. This Steady-State Visually Evoked Potential (SSVEP) activity can be used to achieve the aforementioned communication goal. In this work, we first analyze the spontaneous electrical activity of the brain, to distinguish two mental sates (concentration / meditation). Then, following an SSVEP type of approach, we divide the stimulating screen in four areas, each of which flickering at a distinct frequency. By observing the responding frequency from the occipital lobe of the subject, we can then estimate the 2 bit decision he made. We observe that such a setup is efficient for real time BCI, and can be easily integrated in mobile devices. Besides, the user is able to change voluntarily her/his decisions, interacting with the system in a natural manner.
