ERPLAB Toolbox - OpenSource

ERPLAB toolbox is a freely available, open-source toolbox for processing and analyzing event-related potential (ERP) data in the MATLAB environment. ERPLAB is closely integrated with EEGLAB, a popular open-source toolbox that provides many EEG preprocessing steps and an excellent user interface design.

ERPLAB adds to EEGLAB's EEG processing functions, providing additional tools for filtering, artifact detection, re-referencing, and sorting of events, among others. ERPLAB also provides robust tools for averaging EEG segments together to create averaged ERPs, for creating difference waves and other recombinations of ERP waveforms through algebraic expressions, for filtering and re-referencing the averaged ERPs, for plotting ERP waveforms and scalp maps, and for quantifying several types of amplitudes and latencies.

LSD effect in Human Brain

What is the effect of LSD in Human Brain causing abnormal sensasions and hallucinations? The answer can be obtained from Imperial College London researchers, working with the Beckley Foundation, that have visualised the effects of LSD on the human brain. Also a very interesting test to do with EEG.
“Our results suggest that this effect underlies the profound altered state of consciousness that people often describe during an LSD experience. It is also related to what people sometimes call ‘ego-dissolution’, which means the normal sense of self is broken down and replaced by a sense of reconnection with themselves, others and the natural world. This experience is sometimes framed in a religious or spiritual way – and seems to be associated with improvements in well-being after the drug’s effects have subsided.”

BCI–Based Communication in the Completely Locked-In State

The study, published in PLoS Biology, detailed the researchers’ efforts in developing a non-invasive method to allow four completely locked-in patients to answer “yes or no” questions. The technique involves patients wearing a cap that uses infrared light to measure blood flow in different areas of the brain when they think about responding “yes” or “no” to a question.

The researchers trained the patients by asking them control test questions to make sure the system could accurately record their answers, before asking questions about their current lives.

Wireless EEG invasive electrode

One more (BIG) step to Brain-Computer Interfaces: Australian researchers at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne have developed an electrode that can record brain activity from the motor cortex, without the need for invasive brain surgery

The electrode, called a stentrode, is implanted into a blood vessel in the brain using minimally invasive surgical techniques. The electrode can record signals from the motor cortex and transmit them wirelessly through the skin to a device outside the body.

Open-Source Biosignal Acquisition Device

Glasgow Neuro has released an open-source data acquisition device for wearable health monitoring applications. It can amplify electroencephalography (EEG) signals, also ECG and EMG, and be processed by external devices such as tablets and smartphones.

The ATTYS is able to transmit raw data, uncompressed signal data at 24 bits wirelessly via Bluetooth. Apps can then be easily built that filter and process this data while maintaining the ability to see the original source, a feature particularly useful for scientific studies. See the video.

Natural brain-information interfaces: Recommending information by relevance inferred from human brain signals

A new concept of BCI called Brain-Information Interface is being studied with already published results.

Finding relevant information from large document collections such as the World Wide Web is a common task in our daily lives. Estimation of a user’s interest or search intention is necessary to recommend and retrieve relevant information from these collections. We introduce a brain-information interface used for recommending information by relevance inferred directly from brain signals. In experiments, participants were asked to read Wikipedia documents about a selection of topics while their EEG was recorded. Based on the prediction of word relevance, the individual’s search intent was modeled and successfully used for retrieving new relevant documents from the whole English Wikipedia corpus.

The results show that the users’ interests toward digital content can be modeled from the brain signals evoked by reading. The introduced brain-relevance paradigm enables the recommendation of information without any explicit user interaction and may be applied across diverse informationintensive applications.

JOB - PhD student Sleep for traumatic memories

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severely disabling mental disorder with traumatic memories at its core, resulting in nightmares and flashbacks. Sleep is crucial in the treatment of PTSD, since traumatic memories that get neutralized during treatment subsequently get integrated in long-term storage during memory consolidation while asleep. This stabilizes the updated memories and further reduces their affective charge. Recent advances in basic memory research show that memory consolidation can be enhanced by presenting reminder cues. This project aims to integrate these memory reactivation strategies during sleep for the first time in standard PTSD treatment to increase overall therapeutic effectiveness. By using functional MRI before and after and polysomnography during treatment, the project will at the same time elucidate the underlying neurobiological mechanism.

The candidate is responsible for conducting experimental research (including patient inclusion and fMRI/EEG measurements), data analysis and reporting findings in international journals. He/she is expected to submit a high quality dissertation for examination within four years of the appointment.
